A diagnosis that ultimately calls for a kidney transplant comes with a lot of emotions and even more questions. While there are many different conditions that can lead a person to end stage renal disease, a kidney transplant is typically the best long-term solution. Different countries and regions/states have different waiting times in order to receive a deceased donor transplant. The average US wait time for a kidney is 3-5 years. With the advancements in living donations and donor swapping many are finding it easier than ever before to obtain a living donation.

What to Expect
A kidney transplant surgery takes 4-5 hours on average. The transplanted kidney may start producing urine right away and other times it may take a bit of time for the kidney to start fully working. Rarely a person will need some dialysis treatments to help the process. A person typically stays in the hospital anywhere from 4 to 7 days but each patient is different. While in the hospital the doctors will adjust the proper dose of anti-rejection medicine needed. Upon discharge the patient will be given painkillers and clear instructions on what pills are to be taken and when. There will be many follow up appointments for the first month and then slowly a patient will need to be seen less and less.
