Hypertension aka High Blood Pressure, is a leading cause of kidney failure. It is important to follow doctors orders and take any prescribed medications in order to avoid long term hypertension side affects. A healthy diet is important to assisting in reduction of blood pressure.
The DASH diet is recommended to a person battling blood pressure. This is a diet that focuses on reducing sodium, fats, and alcohol while increasing fruits, vegetables, and healthy proteins. HOWEVER, for a person with chronic kidney disease the DASH diet recommends potassium rich foods, dairy and proteins and depending on the stage of CKD these types of nutrients actually need to be limited.
Beware of Low Sodium / Reduced Salt Products
Many products that have reduced or low sodium (aka salt) may have increased POTASSIUM. This can be dangerous to a person with kidney failure especially those with more advanced stages. When the kidneys are not functioning properly a build up of potassium can occur this is called hyperkalemia and can be serious. It is important to speak with your doctor and nutritionist to better understand reduced sodium foods and sodium replacements.
