Kidneys are two bean shaped organs about the size of fist inside the abdomen.
They serve the body as natural blood filters. They regulate and balance electrolytes, fluids and remove waste from body. Kidneys play an essential role in regulation of blood pressure.
The Main Functions of Kidneys are:
- Excretion of waste products
- Acid-Base homeostasis: which is maintenance of balance between chemical acids and bases, also called body pH./li>
- Maintenance of Electrolyte-Water balance
- Hormone secretion: kidneys secrete Erythropoietin (regulates the production of red blood cells in bone marrow), Renin (controls blood pressure) and is involved in the activation of Vitamin D
